On Sunday 16 October, Trafalgar Square was teeming with thousands of  Londoners and tourists who came to witness the Diwali celebrations organised by Mayor of London and Diwali in London committee. Inaugurated by Mayor Sadiq Khan, the festival of light attracted crowds of all faiths, with dancers, singing and live entertainment throughout the day to celebrate the 15th year of Diwali at Trafalgar Square.

Akademi ran the Dance Zone for the day, running workshops on Indian classical, folk and Bollywood dance for members of public. The marquee saw waves (over 200!) of enthusiastic participants of all ages and abilities queuing up and trying out some new Indian dance moves.

The workshops were led by:

Kashmiri Folk Dance – Jammu Kashmir Festival brought to London by ICCR and The Nehru Centre.

Rajasthani Folk Dance – Sarjan Nartan Academy (led by Neha Patel)

Dhol drumming – London School of Dhol (led by Dylan)

Garba dance – Dance n Beats (led by Chittal Patel)

Odissi Dance – Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (led by Katrina Rute)

Bharatanatyam dance – Radhika Prabhu

Bollywood dance – Shiamak London (led by Rohan and Shruti Shah)

Look out for next year!
