Akademi presents Margam by Sooraj Subramaniam
March 24 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm£15
In this debut recital, Margam, Sooraj Subramaniam takes the audience on a journey into Bharatanatyam; through rhythmic musical patterns, nuanced expressive mime, complex emotional narratives and scintillating pure dance.
This specially curated event from Akademi will feature choreography by Sooraj Subramaniam, accompanied by a stallar ensemble of traditional Carnatic musicians.
Originating in the temples of South India, Bharatanatyam employs highly stylised gestures and facial expressions to explore the enduring theme of love. Margam, meaning path or way, refers to the traditional format in which solo Bharatanatyam has been performed since the early-19th century.
Sooraj Subramaniam: Sooraj is trained in the Indian classical dance styles of Bharatanatyam and Odissi, and later on in classical ballet and contemporary dance forms. He continued classical ballet training in Australia and graduated from the Western Australian Academy for Performing Arts, at Edith Cowan University. Concurrently, he co-directed Mudhra Dance Company teaching and performing Indian classical and contemporary dance.
