CHOREOGATA
Choreography Commissions & Choreographic Development Fund
CHOREOGATA was a platform for emerging contemporary South Asian choreographers in the UK, established by Akademi. British based with international roots, these artists provide a fresh take on the South Asian performing arts tradition.
With the generous support of Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Akademi supported the creation of 18 new dance works from emerging and mid-career South Asian choreographers. Akademi’s Choreography Commissions supported artists to develop their choreographic practice. They provided exciting opportunities to showcase new work, as well as offering financial support and the very highest level of advice and mentoring.
This national scheme was delivered in partnership with Gem Arts, Sampad, Kadam, CICD, South East Dance, Yorkshire Dance, Dance Umbrella, Southbank Centre and The Place. The ACE Choreographic Development Fund was awarded to three artists, Kali Chandrasegaram, Aakash Odedra and Subathra Subramaniam in 2011. The artists were mentored by Theresa Beattie.
