Join us for a day of artist development and exploration in dance for special educational needs and older adults. The symposium will include a mixture of practical workshops, presentations and discussions, lead by experts in the dance for health sector. This full day event will help practitioners enhance their skills through a number of sessions regarding teaching approaches in different settings such as community centres, care homes, hospitals, and SEN schools.

Event schedule:

9:30am – 9:50am: Registration and headshots.

9:50am – 10:30am: Introductions.

10:30am – 11:30am: Practical workshop focussing on teaching dance for older adults in the community and in hospitals. Led by Stella Howard, Learning and Participation Dance Practitioner at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

11:30am – 11:45am: Break.

11:45am – 12:45pm: Practical workshop focussing on teaching dance to children with special educational needs. Led by Juliet Diener, Principal and Founder of I Can Dance.

12:45pm – 1:45pm: Lunch.

1:45pm – 3:00pm: Sharing and scenario workshop based on the areas of community dance explored during the practical sessions.

3:00pm – 4:00pm: Closing session. Presentations and discussions led by artists and staff members from Akademi’s outreach programmes.

4:00pm: End.

This event will have a specific focus on the use of South Asian dance styles, however, we welcome artists from all other genres who have a key interest in these particular areas of community dance.
