Jane Chan & Sung Im Her
A double bill by East Asian women from the diaspora community. The solo works unpack issues around the lack of self-expression, repression of voice and displacement in a foreign land, condition and circumstance.
Void – Jane Chan
A solo inspired by Jane’s late grandmother who had Alzheimer’s disease and the older adults she met through movement and dance projects in community and hospital settings through various community projects including Dance Well by Akademi. Confronted by constraints of the body and mind, Void explores freedom within a lack of means. Void reveals the beauty and brutality of human life.
You Are Okay – Sung Im Her
An expression of self when the voice is being repressed. You Are Okay! emerged from research into immigration and the borderlines between and within people. It is an attempt to discover the displaced body in a foreign country.
Future Fridays is a regular programme championing new work led by Chisenhale Dance Members. A first look at projects which shun conventions and face the future of performance head-on.
Celebrating 40 inspiring years.
2019 is Akademi’s 40th anniversary year and we want to celebrate the breadth and richness of South Asian dance in the UK. We’ve invited artists to submit information on London-based events that they are planning between April 2019 and April 2020 to form the Akademi Associated programme.
