Training

Akademi delivers outreach work in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, day care centres, schools, care homes and community centres. Working as a dance artist in settings such as these requires varied approaches and specific skills training. Akademi provides annual training for artists who lead on current programmes to ensure a high standard across all areas of community work.

The following are requirements for all learning and participation dance artists that Akademi work with:

  • An enhanced DBS check issued within the last 3 years. If you do not currently hold a DBS certificate, you can apply for one through People Dancing. Alternatively, check with your employer.
  • A clear understanding of/completed Level 2 safeguarding training.
  • Previous experience of dance teaching, community dance or dance for health is usually desirable.
  • It is also recommended that you hold your own Public liability insurance. This can also be obtained through People Dancing’s membership or check with the organisation you are currently working with.

Training Packages

Akademi offer training packages that focus on developing and enhancing skills required to lead outreach work within dance, with the option to choose either a one-day or two-day training package.

A one-day training package will include practical sessions designed to demonstrate the best practices when working with older adults and young children with SEN, as well as theory sessions discussing the basics of lesson planning and key things to consider when delivering workshops.

A two-day training package will provide more in-depth practical sessions and detailed information working with older adults living with chronic health conditions in care settings and hospital environments, and children with complex needs in schools and in the community. In addition, there will also be the opportunity to observe Dance Well workshops, allowing for a deeper insight into how Akademi run their outreach programmes and to learn from shadowing experienced artists.
